Hakuouki: SSL is a not-at-all-serious spin-off of the original Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan, in which the entire cast is not longer entangled in a brutal, heart wrenching series of historical events sprinkled with bittersweet romance and a lot of kicks in the feelings. Instead, they all go to high school.
Yup.
The animated shorts - unvoiced, but with sound effects - are available to watch, translated, on Youtube. The plot is essentially: Chizuru is the only girl at what should technically be an All-Boy's School..... and then shenanigans happen. Lots of shenanigans. It doesn't take itself seriously, and really, it's best you don't either.
So, this page is essentially a place holder for some of the headcanon I have for Chizuru based off of this universe, as opposed to the original Hakuoukiverse. It's for curious souls, and for me, so I can keep my head on straight.
❀ School: Chizuru's a good student. She's by no means the brightest in the school, and she won't be winning any awards for intellect in the future, but she works hard. She's one of those girls who's never skipped a day of school in her life, and panics when she's late, or does something slightly wrong. Her grades aren't bad, but they aren't amazing either, and her homework is never, ever late. Most, if not all of it comes from her hard work and determination not to let her grades slip. She has some trouble with English, but refuses to accept help with her homework, because she's aware she won't learn if someone else does it... and she doesn't like to constantly lean on people. Sometimes this can backfire, because she hasn't quite grasped the nuances of knowing when she really should ask for help because it would help her, and when she'd just be taking advantage of other people's kindness. As for clubs, she's a little torn. Being the only girl at an all-boy's school means a lot of the clubs are orientated towards things she's not interested in, like sports. On the other hand, she doesn't want to be part of the Go-Home-Club, as having a club would look better on her future resumes, so she's a somewhat unwilling member of the music club. She's surprisingly good at music, but still nothing life changing and special. She plays the flute.
❀ Friends:
❀ Chizuru tends to get along well with most people. She's usually found with Heisuke, or Okita when he decides he's going to hang around. She has friends outside of the school as well, friends of the same gender as her. Her best friend, aside from Heisuke, is Osen-chan. She tries to keep an eye on her brother while she's at school, even though she doesn't get close to him because of his hostile attitude towards her most of the time. She worries that, despite being part of the disciplinary committee, he may be going off the rails a little, but hopes that he'll be okay. She can feel a little helpless when it comes to helping him... Her feelings towards the teachers are mostly positive, even if Nagakura-sensei can sometimes be a little... too much. She thinks Hijikata-sensei is very attractive, but keeps that to herself as it wouldn't be appropriate to think on it too much and... Hijikata-sensei can be... very strange sometmes. It's a little worrying.
❀ Family: Chizuru's family life is... odd. She knows her twin brother, Kaoru, was adopted out of the family when they were younger, but she was never told the reasons behind the adoption, even after she was old enough to start asking the pointed questions. She has a little resentment towards them for sending Kaoru away and not telling her why, but also a fair bit of resentment for herself for being able to reconnect with him when they met at school. Other than the bizarre case of the disappearing brother, Chizuru's home life is basically run of the mill. She gets on fairly well with her parents, but... they're not immensely close.
